What to Bring: Shovels and a snack
Deer Thicket Sanctuary is a 60 acre private property of mixed forest and field, stewarded by “owners” Dusty and Christine Staub. It is used for monthly community fires, women’s fires and various wisdom-sharing events. Gpg member Sara Stratton is helping with a new phase of installations to tie together an otherwise wild and natural setting. The Staubs are delighted to welcome gPg members for a visit so they may add their ideas to what is evolving on the Land at Deer Thicket.
In addition to adding our ideas, on Saturday gPg member Justin Vettel will be leading us in a work project. The plan is to assemble a shovel brigade. The driveway at this property is designed so it funnels water directly towards the house. We’ll be digging a diversion ditch, to move water away from the house. This will ultimately have a pond liner in it, as we do not want the water to absorb into the ground. During the process we will be touching on principles of swale and pond creation, while also building a system to move water underground. Some plants will need to be moved away, and there will be quite a few hellebores that will need to find new homes as a result…probably about a dozen or so plants up for grabs.
So bring a shovel and some snacks and come check out a beautiful property on a sunny Saturday morning!
